Interactive Book

The digitalization of everyday life has left the experience of books and classic storytelling fundamentally affected. The devices appearing on the market have opened doors in front of the optimalization of science and knowledge communication: the passive reader has now become the active participant of the story with powers to shape the narrative.
The goal is to create reading experiences to transmit content most efficiently and fun. Tools and methods that serve this purpose are in the focus of questions the Lab is researching about.

Birdsong

An app to teach solmisation as a game

Birdsong is an app meant primarily for children. It will help to develop their musical memory, hearing and reading skills. The app facilitates kids to get introduced to solmisation, and it does all in a playful way. The child is challenged to place a family of birds one by one onto wires of an electricity pole, thereby making them sing. The birds must reproduce an earlier seen sequence of notes and heard melody. In course of the game children will learn music step-by-step, as the exercises get more and more complex.

Home of Monsters

Home of Monsters

This interactive book for kids was written especially for tablets, to allow (or rather, require) the „reader” to influence the flow of the story. Three little monsters turn the house of a very tidy fairy a mess. The fairy cleans up all the time, but the monsters pop up again and again, destroying the order, unless the reader catches the monsters and sends them to their own homes. This requires manual as well as mental skills, as in the home of each monster some puzzle is to be solved. But even then, a suzrprise awaits, the story is not over.

Little Rooster and His Diamond Halfpenny - An experimental interactive book by MOME TechLab

One of the research topics of the Lab is interactive books. The touch display of the emerging hand-held devices provide a multitude of possibilities to make illustrations move – either by the activity of the reader (including toddlers who cannot read at all), or automatically. What makes an interactive book „good”?

In what ways can the interactions strengthen   – or destroy –  the experience of story- telling, the joy for reading,  the comprehension of the text? What can be the style of illustration, if it is to animated, and has to live on a device, not on pages of a book? We are seeking answers for these and many similar questions, in order to find out the potentials of the new genre of the interactive book.

This is a special book. The images inside can be viewed just like in any other book, however, if in front of the camera of the computer the songs beside the images of the play "Aunt Pepper" begin to play. Of course, only if the program, specifically created for this purpose is installed on the computer.
